Why You Should Never Buy A Puppy Online

Don’t Buy Dogs Online

Shopping online is so easy now; the world is literally at everyone’s fingertips. Online shopping offers varieties that were previously limited before. A perfect example of this is the variety of dog breeds available to consumers, giving rise to buying dogs online.

When searching for a puppy online, people usually select their preferred dog breed by reading descriptions and looking at the photos. Then, they click on links to breeders selling the puppies. This may seem convenient, but this is the worst way to bring a puppy into your life. Before buying a puppy or dog online, please understand these very common risks.

Are You Sure That Dog Breed is Right for You?

As a professional dog trainer, I’m shocked when potential pet owners choose a specific breed of dog based on Internet descriptions. Unfortunately, I’ve witnessed senior citizens (in their mid-80s) purchasing robust Rottweilers, Bouviers and Belgian Malinois, all of which are large and highly energetic dogs that can easily knock someone over. Some people purchase Mastiffs because they wanted a large dog, but were unaware that this breed drools buckets of slobber every hour.

Most online breeders are trying to sell puppies quickly, so they will tell you anything you want to hear. These irresponsible breeders will tell potential pet owners a certain breed is perfect with children, other dogs, cats or whatever. There are pros and cons to everything, including different dog breeds.

How to Choose a Breed of Dog

Before choosing a puppy to bring into your home, take the time to meet several of these breeds in person. Local dog shows are a perfect place to meet and pet dogs, talk to knowledgeable dog breeders, and have all your questions answered. Another way to meet dogs is to contact reputable breeders from a specific breed’s AKC parent club (not the breeders listed on AKC’s website).

To find reputable AKC parent clubs, visit a search engine and type in your chosen breed’s name and “club of America” afterwards. Examples include: “Rottweiler Club of America,” “Bouvier Club of America” or “Belgian Malinois Club of America.” Reputable dog breeders will spend hours explaining the good, bad and ugly of a specific breed, and will always take their puppies back.

Online Puppies are From Puppy Mills

Puppy mills continue to breed dogs in horrible conditions to maximize profits. Online puppies’ parents are kept in rabbit cages, are rarely fed, and have never seen grass or sun. These poor dogs have no veterinary care and are treated as livestock. In the past, puppy millers would sell puppies on roadsides and to pet retailers that sell puppies. Due to the upsurge of protests from animal lovers, puppy mills now hide and sell their puppies online. Don’t let their prices fool you either. Many puppy mills sell their puppies at high prices, so potential pet owners assume they’re reputable breeders.

It’s a Gamble

Puppy mills select, and even steal, photos of cute puppies to post on their website or social media page. Irresponsible dog breeders will promise a perfect puppy and tell unsuspecting people whatever they want to hear until a money transfer has been completed.

Terrible breeders will convince them that their puppies were born and live indoors, which is never true. Plus, it’s impossible to verify because potential pet owners aren’t able to visit the puppy’s home.

Once people receive their precious puppy, most are shocked that their puppy doesn’t resemble the one in the picture. And it doesn’t stop there. They’ll soon realize their puppy has health issues after a well puppy vet visit, and feel like they’ve been bamboozled.

Fortunately, most pet owners won’t return their puppy because they feel sorry for him or her. It wasn’t the puppy’s fault the breeder didn’t care. However, for puppy millers, they’re beyond thrilled with your decision because they get to keep your money and will continue to pull the heart strings of other potential pet owners. It’s a lucrative business.

Only purchase a puppy from a reputable breeder or, even better, recuse a dog in need.

How To Clean Food Stuffed Dog Toys

Cleaning Kong Dog Toys

Every positive reinforcement dog trainer agrees on one thing: Dogs should have plenty of mental enrichment every day. Food stuffed dog toys, such as Kongs, are a quick and very effective way to keep your dog’s brain busy all day. But how do you remove all the sticky residue from the cracks and crevices of dog toys afterwards? Here are a few simple hacks for cleaning Kong dog toys.

Smart Kong Stuffing Tactics

For the most part, sticky and gooey foods make the best filling for rubber Kong toys. While the sticky texture of these foods help keep the filling inside the toy, it can leave a gross residue that’s impossible to remove. The toughest place to remove gummed up food is the very bottom or within crevices.

To prevent food from caking at the bottom, fill the bottom third of the Kong with kibble. Then, fill the remaining 2/3 of the toy with cream cheese, yogurt, peanut butter, squeeze cheese, banana, honey, bread or sweet potatoes. Freeze to ensure the food stuffed dog toy lasts longer.

RELATED: 4 Kong Stuffing Tips to Make Your Life Easier

Scrape With a Butter Knife or Bottle Brush

When dog saliva and peanut butter mesh together during an hour-long dog toy licking session, traces of food will inevitably get left behind. Use a butter knife to scrape out the larger chunks lodged inside and toss into your garbage disposal. Some pet owners use a bottle brush to scrub out the food stuck in cracks and crevices, but wire bristles just don’t reach all the way inside. Either way, it’s important to scrape out the large bits from the bottom to prevent mold from growing.

Soak in Warm Soapy Water

Once the larger chunks have been removed, it’s time to give the dog toy a long soak. In the past, I would put dishwasher safe toys on the top rack of our dishwasher, but then I would notice the color fading and cracks developing due to extreme heat.

Now, I fill our sink with hot water and liberally drizzle natural dishwashing liquid to form a hot soap soak. If you go this route, toss all of your rubber Kong toys into the water and let them soak for an hour. A long soak will help lift and remove the food stuck in crevices. Rinse each toy well after thorough soaking, air dry and stuff them with food for your dog again.

Portable Dog Carriers Keep Your Dog Safe And Your Shoulders Pain-Free

Portable Dog Carriers

Sharing your home with small dogs offers many perks due to their pint size. Small dogs eat less, poop less and are completely portable, which saves money and your back! While it’s tempting to hold a small dog in your arms, it’s actually safer for small dogs to travel in portable dog carriers or crates. Additionally, if a small dog is fearful of encountering other dogs or visiting the vet’s office, a dog carrier will make your dog feel much safer.

Benefits of Using a Portable Dog Carrier

In a pinch, holding your dog works well, but it’s not the safest way to contain a small dog. Tiny dogs can jump down or accidentally fall, causing major injuries, such as broken bones. Also, when pet owners hold small dogs in their arms, these tiny dogs are exposed to other dogs, which can cause dog aggression.

A couple of months ago, a large man was holding a 10-lb dog in his arms while standing in the veterinary clinic waiting room. A large dog entered the clinic. The tiny dog freaked out and deeply scratched and bit the pet owner in the face and neck. This could’ve been prevented if the dog were in a pet carrier. Unfortunately, this happens often.

Portable Dog Carriers for Dogs 1-20 lbs

Options for portable dog carriers are endless for dogs under 20 lbs. Carrier style bags are extremely popular due to their convenience. They’re super easy to place and to carry a small dog next to your body. Plus, carrier style bags have zipper openings, adjustable carrying straps, vented fabric and plush lining. There are numerous options, colors and styles for you to choose from based on your individual style and your dog’s comfort needs.

SleepyPod Carriers are super stylish, offer different shapes, can be used as car crates and are one of the few dog carriers that have passed strict car crash safety standard testing.

Portable Dog Carriers for Dogs 21-30 lbs

Over the last few years, backpack style dog carriers have become the latest trend, especially for dogs over 20 lbs. Carrying a heavy carrier style bag with shoulder straps will damage a pet owner’s shoulders quickly. Manufacturers picked up on that and have created dog carrier backpacks that are extremely versatile.

Some backpack carriers feature wheels and handle attachments, similar to suitcases, for pet owners that have to carry their small dogs for a longer distance. My favorite dog carrier backpack for a Miniature Bull Terrier, that weights 28 pounds, is the Snoozer Backpack and Roller dog carrier. It’s not very stylish, but it’s a fanatic product to haul 25- to 30-lb dogs around while keeping your shoulders pain-free.

Dog Carrier Safety Tips

Small dogs should feel like their carrier is a comfortable and safe spot, especially during travel. When dogs are inside their carriers, they should be completely contained, meaning their heads should not poke out of any opening. If a dog’s head can peek out of an unzipped opening, that means your dog can jump out of the carrier. Also, it’s important to:

  • Hold your dog in her carrier close to your body to prevent other dogs from sniffing or someone bumping into the carrier.
  • For backpack or suitcase type carriers, place it against a wall to prevent it from tipping over.
  • If your small dog is fearful, toss a towel over visible areas to create a visual barrier. When dogs are unable to see other dogs or people, they feel much safer.
  • Give your small dog lots of yummy treats or food stuffed toys while she sits in her carrier.

With so many portable dog carrier options available, there’s no reason why small dogs should not ride in safety and comfort!

How To Help Dogs After A Hurricane

6 Ways to Help Dogs After a Hurricane

Help Dogs After Hurricane

What just happened in Houston, due to Hurricane Harvey, has been devastating. Unfortunately, surrounding areas in south Texas and southwest Louisiana were affected too, and they’re scrambling to save their homes, pets and livestock. As you watch hundreds of thousands of evacuees rescuing their dogs, you may wonder how you can help evacuated dogs until their pet owners are back on their feet. These tips will lead you in the right direction, so you can help dogs affected by the hurricane!

1. Foster

Hands down, finding people to foster dogs is the biggest need for all rescues. Large pet rescue organizations usually have the capacity to house numerous dogs safely, but space becomes extremely limited during natural disasters.

Smaller rescues located in rural areas have very limited space, making foster homes even more critical. Fostering a dog is easily a 2- to 6-month commitment, but keep in mind that rescue organizations cover all food, vet and supply costs. To apply as a foster home for dogs in need, find a local pet rescue and complete their foster home form.

2. Transport

During natural disasters, most dogs are evacuated out of the flooded area, which means transportation is needed. During flooding, anyone with a flat bottom boat is needed. Bring various crate sizes, dog treats, bottled waters, plastic bowls, and slip leads to capture and contain dogs during rescues. Coordinate drop-off points with dog rescue groups to ensure all pets are kept safe.

3. Set Up a Virtual Lost & Found Dogs Page

While we witnessed many evacuees leaving with their pets, there were several who were unable to get home to grab their furry friends before floodwaters blocked roadways. Thankfully, rescuers were pulling dogs in need out of homes and flooded backyards, then safely placing these dogs with dog rescue organizations. The problem was that it left pet owners looking for their dogs.

Many years ago, horrible tornadoes ravished Dallas, TX, leaving many pets displaced. A wonderful person started a “Dallas tornado dog lost and found” page on Facebook, and rescuers uploaded found dog photos online with their contact information. Pet owners, searching for their dogs, could log on and find their beloved family member. This is an excellent way to reunite dogs with their families. Surprisingly, many volunteers stepped up and spent countless hours matching photos of found dog photos with lost dog photos.

4. Donate Items

While large pet rescues donate to larger metropolitan areas, it’s important to remember that rural pet rescue organizations are in desperate need for supplies as well. Items that are much needed during natural disasters include:

  • Dog food
  • Treats
  • Collars
  • Leashes
  • Toys
  • Chews
  • Bowls
  • Crates
  • Dog beds
  • Shampoo
  • Towels
  • Blankets
  • Pee pads
  • Flea and tick products

Contact your local dog rescue or, better yet, visit their website and order items off their “wish list.” Chewy.com offers free and fast shipping with great prices—I just shipped two large crates straight to the doorway of Lake Charles Pit Bull Rescue.

5. Fundraise

Coordinate fundraisers for local dog rescue organizations with “wish list” items they’ve posted at local pet supply stores. Create a media blast and ask for specific items, such as dog crates and food, with drop-off destination points clearly noted. People want to help, so make it easy.

6. Donate Money

Donating funds is always appreciated, as most local dog rescue organizations use these funds for veterinary bills. Many stray dogs have critical medical needs, and even with deep rescue discounts, veterinary bills can easily total over a thousand dollars per month for small rescue groups. If your local rescue has not set up a donate site yet, start one for them (with their permission of course).

Best Dog-Friendly Air Freshener: It Works Everywhere

August 28, 2017 by Fanna Easter

Indigo Wild Air Freshener Review

Wild Indigo Air Freshener Review
Carlos Die Banyuls/Adobe Stock

Sharing our homes and vehicles with dogs can get a bit smelly. While dogs should have minimal body odor, they can still emit noxious gas at times. Plus, a wet dog can smell musty for hours and that smell lingers for days. Instead of using chemical-filled plug-in air fresheners or spraying synthetic air fresheners frantically, give this natural option a try.

Zum-tastic Air Freshener

As a professional dog trainer, I’ve tried thousands of dog-friendly air fresheners. Most products mask odors instead of eliminating them, and they just don’t cut through stinky dog smells quickly and effectively enough.

When searching for the perfect dog-friendly air freshener, I researched natural options that eliminated odors and left a pleasant fragrance behind. Since dogs have an amazing sense of smell, I found chemical and synthetic air fresheners caused dogs to sniff, cough and generally avoid a previously sprayed area. This was a hint that something was wrong. I tried several natural air fresheners, but they all left a light scent that just didn’t cut through dog farts—sorry to be so candid.

After years of searching, I found my favorite natural air freshener ever! Look no further: You must try Indigo Wild YUM MIST doggie spritzer. This stuff smells amazing, and contains purified water, pure essential oils and vegetable glycerin; that’s it!

Indigo Wild’s air freshener is chemical- and alcohol-free, and it’s safe enough to spray on your dog too. While the essential oil ingredient list skips specific oil names, this blend smells like frankincense with hints of lemon, patchouli and lavender. Not only will this freshener knock out odors, this clean scent will also linger for hours. Honestly, the price is extremely reasonable too. An $11 bottle lasts at least six months with daily use.

How to Use

Spritz your home with this air freshener daily. It works really well inside vehicles too. Spray your vehicle’s interior liberally when your dog is not inside. During road trips, if your dog lets a fart rip, spray one pump and it’s gone—voila! This product works so well that we use it as a bathroom spray too.

Do know I don’t work for this company nor do I receive any type of compensation for reviews or recommendations. I just love this product and company! P.S. Their dog shampoo bar smells amazing too!
